Your Health Matters: Understanding the True Value of Health Insurance

Some statistics regarding surgeries that take place in India every year. According to the National Health Profile 2021, published by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, the following are some key statistics:

  • In the year 2019-20, there were a total of 7.7 crore (77 million) surgeries performed in India.

  • Out of these, 2.8 crore (28 million) surgeries were performed in public hospitals, while 4.9 crore (49 million) surgeries were performed in private hospitals.

  • The most common types of surgeries performed in India were cataract surgery, followed by female sterilization and appendectomy.

  • Other common surgeries included hernia repair, hysterectomy, tonsillectomy, and cesarean section.

It is important to note that these statistics are from 2019-20, and the numbers may have changed in more recent years. Additionally, these statistics may not include all surgeries performed in India, as some may not be reported or captured in official data.

According to the National Health Profile 2021, published by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, the number of surgeries performed in India has been steadily increasing over the past few years.

For instance, in the year 2018-19, there were a total of 7.4 crore (74 million) surgeries performed in India, which increased to 7.7 crore (77 million) surgeries in the year 2019-20. This represents a 4.1% increase in the number of surgeries performed year-on-year.

It is worth noting that the increase in surgeries may be due to various factors, such as an increase in the number of hospitals and healthcare facilities, advancements in medical technology, and changes in lifestyle and disease patterns.

According to the National Health Profile 2021, published by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, the following are some key statistics:

  • As of 2019, only 27% of the population in India had some form of health insurance or mediclaim coverage. This means that the majority of the population (73%) still pays for medical emergencies out of pocket.

  • Among those with health insurance, the majority (around 75%) have coverage through private health insurance companies, while the remaining 25% have coverage through government-funded insurance schemes such as Ayushman Bharat and Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana.

  • Out of the total healthcare expenditure in India, around 62% is still paid for by individuals and families out of pocket.

It is worth noting that the statistics may have changed since the publication of the National Health Profile 2021, but they provide a general picture of the state of health insurance coverage in India.

It is very difficult to provide a rough estimate of the percentage increase in the cost of the same treatment for surgeries year after year, as this can vary widely depending on several factors, including geographic location, medical facility, and specific treatment.

It is worth noting that healthcare costs in general have been rising in many parts of the world, including in India. According to a report by the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO), the average cost of hospitalization in India increased by 10% annually between 2004 and 2014.

However, the cost increase for specific surgeries or medical procedures may vary significantly depending on the factors

mentioned above. If you have a specific surgery or medical procedure in mind, it may be best to consult with medical professionals or healthcare providers who may have more specific information.

The importance of having a medical insurance are:

  1. Medical expenses can be unpredictable and often come at a high cost, which can put a significant financial burden on individuals and families. Medical insurance helps to cover these expenses and protects you from unexpected costs.

  2. Without medical insurance, people may avoid seeking medical attention when they need it, which can lead to untreated health problems and potentially life-threatening conditions.

  3. Medical insurance provides access to quality healthcare services without having to worry about the cost. This allows individuals to receive timely and necessary treatment for their medical conditions.

  4. Medical insurance offers peace of mind and security, knowing that you are covered in case of unexpected medical emergencies or illnesses.

  5. Having medical insurance can also help you save money on medical expenses, as insurance providers negotiate rates with healthcare providers and hospitals, leading to lower costs for insured individuals.

  6. Medical insurance can also cover preventive care, such as regular check-ups, screenings, and immunizations, which can help individuals maintain good health and catch potential health problems early.

  7. Medical insurance can also offer coverage for pre-existing conditions, which may otherwise be excluded from coverage or lead to higher premiums.

  8. Some medical insurance policies offer additional benefits, such as coverage for alternative therapies, mental health services, and maternity care.

  9. In some cases, medical insurance may be required by law, such as under the Affordable Care Act in the United States.

  10. Having medical insurance can also provide benefits beyond just healthcare coverage, such as tax benefits and employer-provided coverage as part of a benefits package.
